Skin Care Awareness Month: 5 Ingredients to Avoid

Skin Care

Finding the right skin care products can be confusing. There’s so much conflicting information out there about what products will give you the best results and researching all of them can take hours. Unfortunately, many people overlook ingredients in the products they use, so they fail to realize the long-term harm they can cause. When selecting your skin care products, it is essential to avoid these five ingredients.

1. Phthalates (diethylphthalate, monoethyl)

This ingredient has been found to cause severe developmental and reproductive health problems in studies. Some issues include the interference with the natural functioning of the hormone system, the interference of the male productive track development, and early onset puberty.

2. Fragrance

One of the most widely used fragrance ingredients in products is Linalool. This is a type of terpene alcohol that comes from termites and other insects, as well as plants. Unfortunately, fragrance is a significant contributor to Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

3. Mineral oil

Mineral oils can wreak havoc on anyone with sensitive skin types. This ingredient is notorious for trapping unwanted dirt and oil on top of the skin, making irritations and sensitivities worse.

4. Parabens

Parabens, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and thylparaben, are esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid. Although it is known to kill microorganisms, it can severely compromise the skin. Studies show that parabens like Methylparaben can be converted into species that are toxic reactive oxygen species, which can cause aging of the skin.

5. Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)

These include organ-system toxicity and endocrine disruption. This man-made chemical is a preservative that is often added to lipstick and other cosmetics. Studies have shown that there is a very strong connection between BHT and the development of severe health concerns. For this reason, it is best to avoid products with BHT.

Avoiding products that contain these ingredients will ensure you are able to receive all of the benefits that skin care products offer without the added risks.
