How to prevent dry skin during the winter months
While Florida is much more forgiving than other areas of the United States, where cold temperatures, snow, and dryness can wreak havoc on the skin, dropping temperatures and dryer air can still have an impact on the skin’s appearance, feel, and health. Below are a few tips from our dermatologist, Dr. Stanley Skopit, to help patients take the right steps in protecting and preventing dry skin:
- Keep the skin moisturized – it is vital that patients avoid dry skin by continuing to keep the skin moisturized. During the summer months, many patients use lighter lotions to achieve this, but during the drier winter months, moisturizer is key. Many patients switch to a heavier, thicker moisturizer during the winter, and apply more often for better results.
- Continue to wear high SPF sunscreen – no matter what season it is, it is essential that patients maintain their sunscreen usage. Any exposed areas of the skin should have sunscreen applied each day.
- Stay hydrated – one way to keep the skin from drying out is by staying thoroughly hydrated. Drink plenty of water and avoid dehydrating beverages such as alcohol and sodas with caffeine.
